Today is the most poignant Martin Luther King, Jr. day I can recall. A bunch of shitty, racist teenagers saw fit to harass a Native American man on Friday.
I want to take this opportunity to reflect on some of the ways in which saddens me. I am saddened at how racist American society remains. I am saddened and disheartened to live in a place where thin-skinned, pathetic white supremacists such as these are allowed to terrorize others without consequence. I am enraged to see this kind of hatefulness on display, as I am enraged by police brutality, border separations, and all the other racist shit happening these days. These ignorant fucks make me sick.
I was going to try and write something insightful here, but I don’t think I can. I just think it really sucks how white people managed to convince themselves that racism in America is a thing of the past that has been overcome. That’s how Native American genocide and slavery and Jim Crow laws and segregation and internment camps and police brutality and everything else were presented to me in school, and it’s just not accurate. This is a racist country – it always has been and continues to be so. To claim otherwise is dangerously ignorant.
